American Airlines will start charging $25 for the second bag that travelers check effective May 12.
The exceptions are AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Executive Platinum levels; passengers who have bought full-fare tickets in the Economy, Business and First Class cabins; and those with international itineraries (except to and from Canada and U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Based on the exceptions listed above, American estimates that approximately 4 percent of its domestic customers who check more than one bag will be charged the $25 second bag fee.
